Saturday, November 19, 2011 Redefining Outsourcing - Outsourcing Locally rather than "off-shoring"
Outsourcing is a way for companies of all sizes to save a money, but where the disconnect has often lied is the automatic linking of the terms "outsourcing" and "off-shoring". Today, that is no longer the case and the two terms are really not dependent on each other. This just happens to be the crux of our theme of Redefining Outsourcing.
Off-shoring is the practice of moving a job from the country a company is housed in to another country. There was a time when this was cheaper, and many companies shaved tens of thousands off of their budgets in the process. These days, domestic outsourcing is a much better way to save money. An article on SupplyChainDigital.com (SCD) points out the flaw in traditional off-shoring"
Choosing an outsourcing location based solely on what you’ll have to pay offshore workers is a bad idea, especially if that location is halfway around the globe. Nobody wants a 9,000 mile supply chain.
Instead, it’s sometimes better to look closer to home when outsourcing. Finding a skilled labor base that is time zone friendly to your corporate headquarters can drive down costs associated with training.
However, they are still overlooking the most important factor of outsourcing. Despite their own words, the SCD article is still written under the assumption that a company must outsource to Vietnam or Argentina in order to turn a profit, and that simply isn’t true. Outsourcing to a domestic firm that has an expertise in your field can be much more affordable than the training, hazards, and commitment required for off-shore outsourcing.
When your company decides that it’s time to save some money, consider going to a local company that can smoothly transition your clerical and iT services off-site, and save your bottom line.
